pollen count
It is said that 25% of all Swedes suffer from a pollen allergy that causes respiratory and optic discomfort. Pollen allergy is caused by pollen from wind-pollinated plants. Pollen is plants' way of propagating and the many pollen grains spread easily in the wind. People that suffer from pollen allergies usually get what we call hay fever, with discomfort in the eyes and nose. A lot of people also get asthmatic problems.
The most common species people are allergic to are deciduous trees such as birch, alder, hazel, aspen, oak and beech, and various grasses and mugwort. The pollen season is split into three periods. During the spring, the deciduous trees flower and it's usually the birch that causes the problems. During the summer, it's time for the grasses and during the late summer and autumn the mugwort begins to flower.
Today there are pollen forecasts, just like there are weather forecasts. A number of measuring stations around the country provide reports that allergy sufferer can study more closely to get an up-to-date forecast of the pollen count. Keeping updated with the pollen count is a good idea so that you know when you should start taking your medication for the year's pollen season.
The biggest pollen distribution occurs during hot, dry weather with little rain or wind. If it starts raining, the pollen count usually drops fairly significantly.
